How to Build a Greenhouse for Sun Drying Fruits

Sun dried fruits are a real treat, especially when they're dried in your very own home greenhouse. Examples of fruits and vegetables that you can dry include apples, grapes, tomatoes, peppers and berries. If you are wondering how to build a greenhouse for sun drying fruits, you'll be glad to know a regular greenhouse can suffice if you already have one. If not, there are several types of greenhouses that can be built for the purposes of drying fruit.

A small detached rectangular greenhouse is an ideal location for drying fruit and vegetables. You will need fruit drying racks set up on which to dry the fruit. Racks can be placed on top of one another for the most efficient use of space. For the purposes of drying, the light and warmth should be high and the moisture should be low. You will be able to tell when the fruit is sufficiently dried. Fruit and vegetables that have been dehydrated in this manner can be stored for long periods of time and do not require refrigeration.

When building a detached greenhouse (or even a lean-to style if you prefer) you will need to choose your building materials. Glass is the traditional choice, but plastic is much cheaper. Probably the most popular materials used today is high quality fiberglass. The fiberglass should be high quality because low quality fiberglass has a tendency towards discoloration. Fiberglass is extremely weatherproof and impact resistant, yet has all the good qualities of glass. As far as the greenhouse frame is concerned, both wood and PVC are popular choices.

When you learn how to build a greenhouse for sun drying fruits and vegetables, you're going to probably want to build another greenhouse for plants and flowers. You can have several detached units that can be attached by a passageway. This is an efficient and attractive way to add on to your greenhouse setup over time and create separate zones for different growing projects. There are also handy portable greenhouses that feature tiered layers and use plastic rather than fiberglass. These portable greenhouses can also be used for fruit drying as long as the moisture is kept low and the light and heat high.
