How to Build Mini Greenhouse Structures
![]() |
A fun project for gardeners is to build mini greenhouse structures. A mini greenhouse can introduce you to all the benefits of greenhouse gardening and is perfect for beginners who want to start small. There are plenty of advantages to greenhouse gardening. A greenhouse allows you to grow year-round flowers, fruits and vegetables. It's the perfect place for starting seeds and growing tropical plants that require a lot of light, heat and moisture. A greenhouse is also ideal for anyone interested in hydroponics. Hydroponic gardening is a method of gardening without soil and most commonly features a water based growing medium although rock and clay are also popular medium materials.
The most simple miniature hothouse you can build takes only a clear plastic bag. Simply cover each pot of seeds or cuttings with a clear plastic bag such as a gallon size freezer bag. Do not seal the bag completely as there needs to be some ventilation. Keep the plants well-moistened and the makeshift greenhouse in a well-lit, warm area for best results. If too much condensation occurs on the inside of the bag, cut down on the amount of water in the soil. Maybe you're seeking something basic but not that basic. In that case, a plastic greenhouse seedling kit is a great choice.
Some gardeners actually go for a miniature greenhouse made from the same materials and design principles as a full-size greenhouse. You can find tiered greenhouses crafted from glass, fiberglass or plastic. A tiered greenhouse is great for small gardens or homes because it makes good use of vertical space. There are also portable plastic greenhouses that can be set up and taken down in minutes. They range in price from about $30 to $300 depending on make, model and size.
There are even miniature hydroponic setups which allow for small-scale hydroponic greenhouse growing. The Hydrofarm Hothouse Mini Growing Greenhouse Station is an example of such a product. As you can see, there are plenty of affordable and space-efficient options when it comes to small size greenhouses. You can build mini greenhouse structures in a short period of time and group several of them together if you need more space. One of the benefits of small scale greenhouse gardening is that you can make your garden as small or as large as you choose.
