How to Build a Small Indoor Greenhouse

Contrary to popular belief, a greenhouse doesn't always need to be placed outside. You can learn how to build a small indoor greenhouse which can serve as the perfect spot for germinating seeds and nurturing sprouts. The indoor greenhouse is perfect for anyone who doesn't have the space, time or budget to devote to a full size outdoor greenhouse. The supplies you will need can be found at any hardware store or home improvement center. You will need the following 2x4 planks for the frame, a 4x8 sheet of wood for the base, strips measuring 3/4 by 1 1/2 for the reinforcements and of course the material used to cover the greenhouse.

For an indoor greenhouse, the material you use to cover it has a lot to do with your construction ability. Glass panels are going to be harder to install than plastic sheeting. Plastic sheeting is inexpensive, effective and easy to use. To create storage space in your indoor greenhouse, install shelving on which to stack your plants. You will need a heat and light source as well. There are growing lamps available from garden centers that can be adjusted to suit any height and are flexible enough to be positioned above your greenhouse.

This type of structure is convenient because to control the light your plants receive, all you need to do is change the bulb or turn the light down or off. There are a wide variety of grow lights for sale at most any garden supply center. Different bulbs work for different purposes. Another clear benefit of the home greenhouse is that you can adjust the size to meet your needs. If you're a good at creating building plans you can make your greenhouse as small or as large as you want.

An alternative to deciding to build a small indoor greenhouse is to buy one. There are a variety of pre-fabricated miniature greenhouses of all sizes that can be kept indoors. Like outdoor models some of them are made from plastic and some are made from glass. Some of the most convenient are the plastic tiered models because they require almost zero assembly, are lightweight, portable and ideal for indoor or outdoor use. Another idea is to build an indoor greenhouse from a kit, which requires some work but contains all the plans and parts you'll need.
